Virtual reality is most commonly known for the role it plays in the gaming industry. However, virtual technologies are changing the way many of us explore and engage in the world. Join a discussion with Virtual Reality Specialist, Luka Starmer, and Digital Humanities Specialist, Laura Rocke. Both Starmer and Rocke are from the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries' Digital Media Technology department. They will discuss how virtual technologies can engage patrons, make objects, and places more accessible, and aide in cultural preservation in museums and libraries. Following the discussion, attendees are invited to experience virtual reality applications developed by the Digital Media Technology team.

This fall, the High Fives Foundation confirms that the joys of winter are eternal with the showing of Warren Miller Entertainment’s 70th full-length feature film “Timeless” presented by Volkswagen. The Latino Research Center will host this annual free community event to celebrate Day of the Dead, DĂa de los Muertos. At 11:11 a.m., a traditional opening ceremony takes place at the Virginia Street Bridge and includes a flyby. The parade starts at 11:20 a.m. and marches through the heart of downtown Reno, beginning from the Virginia Street Bridge and heading north to Fifth Street. Spectators are encouraged to show their support along the parade route. Announcers will review the parade from several locations: the Virginia Street Bridge, Second and Virginia streets, the Reno Arch, and Fourth Street. Ending between 1–2 p.m., the commemoration takes place rain or shine.

Dr. John Byck joins us from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to explore key aspects of fine historical firearm design from the sixteenth century through the modern period. From ingenious mechanisms to beautiful decorations to perfect balance, Byck will examine relationships between early engravings and the decorative arts. Dr. John Byck is the Assistant Curator in the Department of Arms and Armor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Byck holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts. A specialist in ornament, he joined the Department of Arms and Armor at the Met in 2015 after serving as a research assistant in the Department of Drawings and Prints.

Kimberly Roberts will discuss the history of camping in Nevada and the Sierra Nevada, including the development of public lands for camping and the building of campgrounds, roads, and trails. The discussion includes an examination of the development of outdoor equipment specific to camping, and the many styles of camping, ranging from leave-no-trace backpacking to luxury glamping. The talk will cover the popularity of children's summer camps and the history of groups such as the Boy and Girl Scouts. Kimberly Roberts is a former HRPS board member and is currently HRPS Program Co-Chair. She works at UNR Special Collections and has a master's degree in history, specializing in the history of photography, science, environment, and landscape. She curated the camping exhibit currently on display at the IGT Knowledge Center on the UNR campus.

Edi Rama: WORK, an exhibition of the artist and Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, includes a series of new drawings created on documents and notes Rama creates during meetings and phone calls, as well as ceramic sculptures and a floor-to-ceiling wallpaper that emulates the wallpaper in his office at the Ministry in Tirana. Edi Rama's drawing practice has developed in close parallel with his career as a politician.
