Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful Christmas Tree Recycling

KTMB’s Christmas Tree Recycling Program provides community residents with an easy way to recycle Christmas trees, and the resulting mulch is used for weed abatement and park beautification projects. During the past 17 years, 169,000 trees have been recycled through the program. There are six drop-off locations: Reno Sports Complex (2975 N. Virginia St., Reno), Bartley Ranch Regional Park (6000 Bartley Ranch Road, Reno), Shadow Mountain Sports Complex (3300 Sparks Blvd., Sparks) and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Stations 32 (1240 Eastlake Blvd. in Washoe Valley), 46 (500 Rockwell Blvd. in Spanish Springs) and 440 (130 Nectar St. in Lemmon Valley). Please wear a face mask and a $3 donation per tree is requested.

Virtual Art Discussion: ‘Animal Crossings’
View a selection of art from the comfort of your home during a Virtual Art Discussion on the exhibition “Animal Crossings,” which will be led by experienced docents who will invite inquiry and discussion. The program will be hosted on Zoom and a Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants the day of the event at 10 a.m.
Virtual First Thursday: Monique De Haviland and the Motley Blues
Tune in for a virtual broadcast featuring music and interviews with Monique De Haviland and the Motley Blues, art introductions and more. The program will premiere on the
museum’s Facebook page, where you can engage in a real-time conversation with fellow participants. The broadcast can also be accessed through our YouTube channel. Museum members may visit Great Basin Brewing Company (Reno or Sparks locations) on First Thursday for 50% off any growler or growler fill by mentioning the offer “First Thursday Growler” during purchase. Limit one per membership. Must be 21 or older to redeem.
Snowshoe Saturdays with Great Basin Outdoor School

Get the kiddos outside and moving on during Snowshoe Saturday trips where kids 8 and older can hike, play games and learn about snow and winter ecology. The programs run at various locations, with our primary location being up on a meadow by Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe. Covid-19 safety protocols will be strictly enforced. Cost is $20 per child per day, which includes snowshoes.
Turning Pages: A Monthly Reading Group
In anticipation of this spring’s “Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts & Crafts Movement,” escape into the era through classic literature. Through May, this book club will meet monthly to discuss three different works of Victorian literature, beginning with “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens. In February and March, the club will read “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë, followed by “North and South” by Elizabeth Gaskell in April and May.
NCET Tech Wednesday: Virtual tour of Reno Ice
Get a virtual tour of Reno Ice, a new state-of-the-art ice arena with year-round recreational activities and facilities. Joel Grace, president of the Reno Ice Board of Directors, will discuss how the nonprofit formed its organization around Olympic quality features. Between January 14 and January 24, festival attendees can watch the 2021 film lineup from the comfort and safety of home.
Enjoy the Wild & Scenic programming on the virtual festival website. The virtual screening room will show all the various content that will become accessible during the festival, including ticketed film sessions and free workshops. Most content will be available as on-demand content, available to enjoy on your own schedule. The festival includes more than 100 environmental and adventure shorts and features, filmmaker engagement sessions, workshops, an art exhibition, envirofair, self-guided excursions and youth programming.

Have a little kiddo that wants to play in the snow? Take them to Tot Snow Trot days to learn about science and winter adaptations while playing in a winter wonderland near the Mount Rose ski area. This event is for children ages 3-7; cost is $20 per child (parents are free). COVID-19 precautions will be strictly enforced.

There are 404,000 Nevadans living with a mental health condition. And in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research shows that quarantine and social distancing requirements are contributing to a massive increase in anxiety and depressive disorders, as well as an increased rate of suicide.
